When we talk about piercing, we often simply think of the aesthetic appearance of the jewelry, yet your choice should not be based solely on that. The quality of piercing jewelry plays a direct role in healing, comfort, and how long the piercing lasts.
First of all: a piercing is a wound that is healing, and this can take up to a year for a Helix or another cartilage piercing, for example. The jewelry is therefore constantly in direct contact with your skin and with a wound, sometimes for several months. If the jewelry is not suitable, it can slow down healing, cause irritation, or lead to allergic or inflammatory reactions.
Not all jewelry is created equal, and that's where the real difference lies!
Materials suitable for piercing
When piercing, specific materials are used that are designed and conceived to be tolerated by the body long-term.
ASTM F136 titanium is today a benchmark for us, as it is for many professionals in piercing. Used in the medical field for implants, for example, it is recognized for its biocompatibility and stability over time. It does not rust, does not release irritating substances, and is very well tolerated in the vast majority of cases. Titanium is also very affordable, with this type of jewelry available in our shop from 15 euros and guaranteed for life.
14-carat gold is also an excellent option, provided it is solid and not plated, beware! It is very stable over time and perfectly suited for daily wear. Conversely, gold-plated jewelry offers no guarantee over time because the plating can disappear very quickly upon contact with the skin: the cheaper the jewelry, the thinner the plating and the poorer the overall quality of the jewelry.
Why "cheap" and "fashion" jewelry is problematic
These low-quality jewels are often composed of alloys whose composition is not controlled, sometimes with the presence of nickel or other heavy metals that are easily irritating. The coating (the famous plating) is generally very thin, or even almost non-existent.
Over time, and sometimes very quickly, the coating wears off and exposes the allergenic metal underneath, which comes into direct contact with your skin and the piercing wound. This can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or completely restart the healing process.
Even on an already healed piercing, poor quality jewelry can be enough to create problems. We regularly see piercings become sensitive again simply due to an unsuitable jewelry change.
Recognizing quality jewelry
Beyond the indicated material, the quality of a piece of jewelry is also seen in the details.
Jewelry designed for piercing is perfectly polished, without roughness, and will not catch on the skin. The closure system of the jewelry also plays an important role: threadless or internally threaded systems are generally gentler on the piercing canal. Conversely, external threads can irritate the piercing during insertion, and we do not recommend this type of jewelry.
Origin is also a good indicator: jewelry from a specialized brand (Buddha Jewelry, BVLA, Naga Jewelry, Neometal...) or a recognized piercing studio like ours will generally be more reliable than jewelry purchased randomly.
If you have any doubts about a piece of jewelry, the simplest thing to do is to ask a professional for advice. Suitable jewelry is not just a matter of aesthetics; it is above all a matter of respecting the body and the healing process.
At Kawaii Place, we only select jewelry designed for piercing, intended for long-term wear, and compatible with healthy healing.
In summary, good piercing jewelry is not a detail: it's what will allow your piercing to heal properly and remain comfortable to wear over time. It is therefore better to invest in reliable and good quality jewelry from the start than to have to deal with complications later.
